Points Trophy Calculation

The points trophy is one of the most important cups to be won at our club. It should represent club commitment and achievement in a season. Attendance at events, helping at events and overall walking all should be considered in awarding this cup. The standings are to be published on the Internet and everybody must be aware of how they can win this trophy. This is part of the whole tradition of the grass roots of the sport. The following are how points are awarded –

Must be competitive member of club to qualify for trophy.
Attendance at club events – 2 points (this includes time keeper and water person).
Attendance at Taranaki road champs – 2 points
Attendance at National road champs – 2 points
Racing in the Open walk – 2 points
Helping on the day of the Open walk – 1 point
Judging at Taranaki road champs or Open walk – 2 points.
Participation in Club events – e.g. Ekiden Relay and Marton to Wanganui – 1 point. Must wear club uniform.
At open handicap events, we will continue to race in 3 main categories and publish the results in this form. This data is reworked for the Points trophy to try to make it fair for everybody. A percentage difference between estimate and actual times is calculated. The highest 5 differentials will get 5 points, 4 points and down to 1 point. This will be in addition to attendance points. This will include all competitive walkers together in this calculation – that is all Seniors and Vets.
At club championships, we will have a closed handicap system. Everybody starts at the gun, but there are still estimates of all walkers – these estimates will be used for calculation of the points the same way as in the open handicap system.
The Norm Read Memorial is an estimated time. As such the 5 that are closest to their estimates will receive the points.
The Norm Morris cup is given out for the best performance at the Daily News half marathon. A performance is calculated from International charts taking sex and age into consideration. The best 3 performances will get the points. Again participation earns 2 points; club uniform must be worn. Helpers on the day will also receive 2 points.
