Club Champs Day 1 - 5 Km 2008

Everyone remembers the event from 2007 – a rather brisk south easterly that nearly brought you to a standstill at times. What we forget is that we had 26 starters and there were some incredible times achieved. This year, I think we were all concerned after the spectacular lightning show of the previous night and in the early hours of the morning.

The conditions proved to be good for racing and the only sign of a storm on the day was a Lightening Loveridge (Men’s champ 28’32), a roaring Rachel (Women’s champ 27’40) and a lashing Lester (36’55) who is the Vet’s champ. In the junior’s event over 1.5K Renee stormed through the 1.5K in an excellent time of 10’22 with Dianna second.

In the women’s race, Rachel made it a no contest this year, she took 1 minute off last year’s time, and Vanessa walked well for second place. Valda also managed to go 50 seconds faster than last year to record a PB of 31’34. Michelle is starting to show the benefits of her training and was nearly 2 minutes quicker this year – well done.

In the Men’s event, Wayne continued his excellent form. His technique is looking very good and he seems to make it look easy when he is walking. The event was a no contest with Wayne 2 minutes ahead of Dave Wackrow.

The best racing of the day was the contest between Phil, Tony, Mike, Nick and Valda. Nick seemed to have the edge on the uphill, with Tony pushing to stay in the race. Valda started fairly slowly but started to pick up the others on the second uphill stretch. At the start of the last downhill Phil and Nick were still leading, with a very hard working Mike trying to keep out a fast finishing Tony. Valda though was quietly catching them. In the end Phil managed to hold out the big wheel of Burrell, followed by Mike then another 2 seconds to Valda and finally Nick.

The performances of the day were by Dave Barrett and Marlene White who were 1st and 2nd in the points challenge. They decided to have their own race and ended up going over the line together in 32’08. Both have turned 60 this year and both would not have achieved that sort of time for a couple of years – well done.

The points trophy has really heated up with the latest results bunching the field. Arthur is still just in the lead from Alan, with Vanessa now in 3rd place.
