Club Champs Day 2- 10 Km 2007
Well done everybody, we made the magical 30 starters for the second day of the club champs at Onaero this year. We always hear about the micro climate out at Urenui Bay, so it proved again; in town it was nice weather and raining for the walk. Mind you it was only a little damp and proved to be perfect conditions for walking with several PBs recorded.
The club champs over 10K this year are Eric Kemsley (Men); Vanessa Lowl (Women); Natasha Lowl (W19) and Brian O’Shea (Vets). In the Junior 2K Renee Moratti took line honours from Deanna Moratti.
The course through Ohanga road has always proved to be a fast one. There is some spectacular scenery but no one seems to take any notice of it. Perhaps you could stop and smell the silage next year Eric! You definitely climb quite a bit of the journey out; but the fit ones walk as fast as if on the flat and then have the benefit of the downhill for a fast second half.
At the 5K champs I wrote about Dennis having the best walk I have seen from him. Well he’s done it again! Can you tell us what you are on please? Each race you seem to be doing a PB at the moment. Perhaps it’s the extra training you are getting walking between your new house (when is the house warming?) and your parents. Excellent time Dennis – 1:01:43. Natasha matched Dennis stride for stride (or 2 to 1 probably), but managed to out sprint him at the end to finish 2 seconds in front.
Vanessa was on fire recently at the 10K National champs when she demonstrated her immense strength on a tough course. Today she again showed this strength, not only first woman home but also a PB in a time of 57’48! Jeff chased hard all the way and finished in a very good time of 58’20.
I think I remember seeing Eric on the start line and some blur up the road somewhere; fantastic walking in a time of 53’18. I must have been going through the 8K mark when he finished.
Brian O’Shea – I think we need to talk to you. When you do 35 minutes for 5K, you are not meant to then do 70 for 10K. Obviously chasing Gaylene had something to do with it; trouble is she reckoned every time she heard the heavy breathing she dug in and pulled away again. Well done really good time. It wasn’t only good for Brian but obviously it was great for Gaylene as well, as she went on to do a PB.
Tanya was another one to do a PB, imagine what you can do if you stop talking. I had to walk faster in the second half just to get away from the constant burble from Lorraine and Tanya! Valda went under 65 minutes (she’s now certainly in her nifty 50s!) and Marlene broke 66 minutes.
Thank you Anne and Tony for a great morning tea, great location an event I always enjoy.
