Gibbon's Time Trial 2008

The following couple of lines are what I wrote after last year’s event – “the weather had been a shocker all week, Tornados on the Wednesday and Thursday and then a howling freezing Southerly on the Saturday. The weather was perfect on the Sunday, no wind and sunny.” So there we go; whatever Colin and Rachel are doing to get the weather right on the Sunday – keep it up please! A whisper of a southerly; the sun shining and a vivid white mountain with a fresh snowfall. What a contrast to Saturday’s vicious hail storms.

This year we decided to have a 5K for everybody followed by a coaching session. Always willing to try new ideas, so feedback on this or any other suggestions would be appreciated.

The Women’s race was hard fought, with the first five finishers going under their handicap times. Rachel did her usual go from the gun; she hauled in Julie on the last lap, shot past Kathleen and Michelle on the home straight but couldn’t catch Vanessa; who raced very well to win on handicap. Rachel took fastest time in 27:06.

The men’s race was a really close one. The first 4 in this race were under their handicap times. When Wayne went past me after about 2K he looked very comfortable and somebody else would have to race really hard to beat him. He and Vanessa obviously worked together as they pulled in the rest of the field. Wayne took the lead in the last few hundred metres of the race and to not only win on handicap but also take fastest time of 27m 49s. The next 3 places were very close, Tony edging Mike by 2 seconds and then a further 1 second back to Dave Wackrow. Well raced guys! Loudest noise goes to Mike and then Tony. The two old timers in this race had a close tussle and although Jeff and Alan were level on the line, Alan won by a belly!

In the Masters event Arthur once again defied age taking it out on handicap and fastest time of 36m 4s. Arthur tried to tell me he turns 80 years old on the 3rd August, sorry mate but I think you need to go and have another look at your birth certificate. Really good to see you out there Sue and well done on second place.

Renee did her first 4K ever and did a great time for it of 28m 37s.

The points trophy has become a very close race with Vanessa taking maximum points 2 events running. Arthur still leads on 30 points, Alan is second on 27 with Dennis and Vanessa on 25 points.

Many thanks to Colin and Rachel for the coaching session after the walk. Mike, can you let us know if you ever find your hips, but please spare us the details of the exercises you are going to do! A fantastic morning tea put on by Rachel, Theresa, Mary and Colin. The soup was really appreciated by everybody. Thank you.
