Ivors's Oakura Outing 2009
Ivor promised a good day and he sure did deliver! We had a warm, overcast, calm and most importantly a pretty dry day for the latest event in the 2009 calendar.
An enthusiastic bunch of 18 walkers and helpers gathered for one of our hillier courses - although when you start out, you may not think so, the first kilometre proves otherwise.
We started with some congratulations for Eric and Rachael winning awards, and Marlene being nominated, at the Athletics Taranaki Sports Awards night.
On a sadder note, a moment’s silence was observed to reflect on the passing of Valda’s mother. Our condolences are extended to Valda, Bruce and the rest of the family.
This was the first handicap event of the season and we were looking with interest at how Dave Barrett would step up to the challenge. Off we went and everything went pretty smoothly except for the minor issues with those that couldn't get out of bed in time and those who managed to lock their keys in the car and needed the AA's assistance!!! We won't mention any names will we Gordon!!!
The racing was good. A few are doing Rotorua next week and so weren't going flat out! Phil Mason returned in style clocking the fastest time over 10km - 63mins 00secs. Mike Nield was three seconds slower but won on handicap. Marlene White won the women's 10km from Lorraine Eldershaw. Over 5km, Gordon held of Denise. Dave Barrett had the fastest time over 5 km.
Thanks to our helpers and to Ivor for hosting our morning tea. We'll be back next year if you'll have us!!!
All the very best to those competing in the Rotorua Marathon next week. The programme resumes on 10 May with Sandra's Saunter around the back blocks of Inglewood.
"Doctors and scientists said that breaking the four-minute mile was impossible, that one would die in the attempt. Thus, when I got up from the track after collapsing at the finish line, I figured I was dead."
Roger Bannister (After becoming the first person to break the four-minute mile, 1952)
