Odd Ball Event 2008
Perhaps if we renamed this event we might get better weather. Last year it was wet, and this year we went for our mid winter swim. Well we would have done if Dennis hadn’t cleared the lake on the course before we started. Only 10 “Oddballs” were on the start line this year; can’t blame everyone else for not coming, but many thanks to Dennis, Tanya and Katie for helping – I think you guys are madder than the rest – at least we were moving in the wet!
Just to complete the oddball theme, we reduced the number of laps by 1 at the last moment. Seniors did 9.3K and the others did 4.65K; keeps our little brains on their toes! For the first 200 metres, most of us were huddled in a little group. Conversation was very boring though, people just wanted to talk rugby and cricket – I personally was pleased when people left me behind. Vanessa had arrived late, jumped out the car, gave a time to Tanya (some idiot suggested 30 seconds less), and off we went. Vanessa was closest to estimate, 8 seconds, (must keep my mouth shut), yours truly was 2nd with a 17 second difference and Eric third. Well done to everybody, not easy guessing times for odd distances and wet, windy conditions. Fastest times went to Eric and Vanessa.
The Points Trophy has become more interesting after this result; the gap has closed on Arthur after he didn’t walk today. Arthur is still in the lead on 28 points, but the cheating handicapper has moved to 2nd on 25 and Dennis is on 23. This will be a tight race once again this year (will have to buy myself a nice red wine if I want to win it)!
Many thanks to Dennis for the use of your home. Fantastic morning tea/lunch – many thanks Mary.
Footnote – when we do estimated time events, we don’t have watches. A person who shall be nameless, left their watch in one of my bathrooms, the timer had been stopped at 59’ 11, only 2 seconds different to one of the times recorded by the Timekeepers! I am good at keeping secrets so I won’t reveal the person’s name!
