Ridgewood Walk 2008
I will start with a quote from last year. “Afterwards everybody said what a fantastic course! We all want to do it again next year, well done Wayne. It proved to be a very fast course.” Yeah Right!
I remember finishing this race last year and thinking yes, it was hard but I had walked well, enjoyed being out in the Countryside and did a good time. The course was short last year by maybe 150 metres; this was remedied this year; strange though it felt a good half kilometre too long. The conditions were not good for racing (the rain held off and the sun shone), but we had head winds on the fast part of the course. Everyone was slower than last year except for Vanessa, tell me how you go quicker when the course is longer and the conditions bad! Many of us were several minutes slower this time.
In the men’s race Phil went through the field very quickly (technique has also improved) to make it no contest. I lumbered around and somehow took second place with Dave W strolling round for 3rd place.
In the women’s event Vanessa went past everybody like they were standing still, took the lead with 1K to go and won by nearly 2 minutes from Valda with an ever improving Tanya taking 3rd place.
Ivor was in a class of his own in the Master’s event with Arthur in Australia for his 80th birthday. Ivor did a very slick 52m 35s for the 6K.
The Points trophy is becoming a very exciting race, Vanessa has taken first place with Alan 2 points back and then Arthur only 1 more point back. Now that we have such a varied program, the points trophy has become an intriguing battle. One of the criteria is attendance at events, Vanessa has only missed 1! We then have points for estimated time events, handicapped over flat courses and handicapped over hills; different courses suit different people.
