Choca Wind Wand Walk 2009
"You're about as useful as a one-legged man at an arse kicking contest."
Rowan Atkinson.
A gorgeous Taranaki morning welcomed the opening event of the 2009 race walking event calendar. This was matched by an equally stunning venue – the Coastal Walkway has to be one of the best places in the world to walk on a sunny warm autumnal morning.
Seventeen competitors turned up for this event – no doubt spurred on by the thought of chocolate prizes at the finish line!!
A moment’s silence was observed to reflect on the passing of Eric’s mother. Our condolences are extended to Eric, Frances and the Kemsley family.
Today's race was an estimated time event with no watches allowed (several people checked Tony on that front!!). This, combined with many of those training for Rotorua having done a big walk on Saturday, lead to much consideration of the estimated times. Some went hard out whilst others took it as an opportunity to unwind from Saturday’s exertions.
Walking to an estimated time with no watch is tricky; as the first event of the season it is down right impossible. Nevertheless there was some good estimation undertaken. The winner (Tom) was within 2 seconds of his estimated time and Tony was within seven seconds (must have been helped by his pacer). A very pleasant morning tea followed with the now traditional hand-out of Easter eggs (thanks Sue). Many thanks to all those that helped out.
The next event is also an estimated time race but much more important – this is the Jubilee running (walking?) of the Norm Read Memorial Race. Good luck to everyone.
