Choca Wind Wand Walk 2010
Welcome back everybody to a new season of race walking; doesn’t seem that long since we had our season finale – the Richard Park Memorial in September – but maybe I am getting older and time certainly isn’t waiting for me. It’s appropriate to mention Richard for this particular walk, I have fond memories of his time keeping and he always made himself available as a cone so we knew where to turn. Brian was nearly as good today so thank you. The other helpers were Lorraine, Mary and Sue – many thanks.
Weather was perfect for walking; when you are blessed at being able to race with such views as we have from the walkway, why would you live anywhere else?
Considering it was Easter Sunday we had an excellent turnout with 17 people racing plus 4 helpers. Today the course was changed to a 6K estimated time instead of the usual 5K; it meant we could start without blocking the walkway.
Let me mention again that it was an estimated time event. What that means is you try to walk as close to an estimate as possible, not write down a time and then try to beat it by as much as you can Tanya and Peter! Only 3 people went over their times (1 of these by 2 seconds); maybe people were egged on by the thought of chocolate at the end of the race!
Well done to Serena who won the largest Easter egg by being 2 seconds away from her estimated time – beginner’s luck or just an excellent judge of pace? Second place went to Valda and third place to the esteemed estimator himself – Arthur Lester. Seems our veterans are wily because the next in order were Ivor, Neil, Dave and Tom! You obviously get wiser as you get older, I hope. Strange but 2 years ago Valda and Arthur tied for 2nd place and today they were 2nd and 3rd – wonder what their secret is?
The fastest times were Peter, 33:28, Mike, 37:17 and Tony in 37:31. In the women’s Vanessa took 36:40, Serena 37:32 and Marlene 41:03.
