29th April: Norm Read convened meeting in Hawera Council offices.  24 people attended & the Taranaki Amateur Walking Club was formed

12 August: Club became an Incorporated Society.  Became affiliated to British Race Walking Association

Oct: Inglewood Show - Arnold Lloyd 1st Junior Mile Walk

The A J Hughes Cup donated for 5 mile Open Walk

1961
18 March: First New Plymouth to Waitara walk. Norm Read - made Life Member

Between the years 1959 & 1964 despite great opposition the club became affiliated to the West Coast North Island (WCNI) Centre and 2 yrs later the NZAAA mainly due to the efforts & determination of Bob Lloyd & Syl Kennedy; exactly when is unknown. See Article From Auckland Athlete 1964 Issue

During the same period the Club's Judging Exam Paper was adopted by WCNI and possibly NZ wide.

50 miler: First of its kind in NZ which had 30 starters but only 9 finished.  1st Norm Read 8h 15m 57.6s, 6th Maurice D Lloyd 11h 41m 49s, 9th Mr Bollingford 12h 40m 10s He was 69

Club Membership was 39.

Leopard Breweries - sponsored a 9 mile race.

Hughes Cup 5km walk held.

New Plymouth to Waitara race held.

Alex Pollock - Founder member designed the club monogram

Trevor Rayner - represented WCNI at Junior National Champs

Clive Herdman - Won First NZ Junior Title for 10km

50 miler was moved that 19 be youngest age to enter race. Results: 1st Norm Read 7h49m 52s
