Norm Read Memorial 21 May 2006

It’s a privilege just taking part in this event; to be walking in the footsteps (albeit slowly) of one our greatest walkers. My first memories of Norm were in the late 80s when I used to do an attempt at running. In the Olex Cables Series I ran the 5K or 10K. For many events I had a close battle with Norm, trouble is he was walking and it took me a couple of seasons to finally beat him! Back then he would often walk with some young blond female Rachael someone…. – yes you occasionally beat me as well Rachael.

This was another fantastic turnout from the walkers. The weather was absolutely perfect, so we were in for some good times. Competing for the Norm Read Cup is one of the most important events of the season and is always keenly contested. Anyone in the club can win; the cup is awarded to the closest estimated time. You get to choose your own time for 5 or 10K; but then don’t have a watch to compare to.

You can tell who the seasoned campaigners are. Watch Jeff Wells carefully in preparation for this event. As he goes around the course in his warmup, he checks wind velocity, heat of the sun and then compares the pace he is walking to his watch. He carefully watches the times others put in and then finally he is ready; most just guess.

The race starts, the gazelles are off, whereas the mountain goats lag a bit – no hills on this course. Instead it is 5 or 10 laps of the Kaimata street circuit. The worst thing about this event is you get lapped several times by Glenn and Eric.

Today though we are honoured to have the Read family in attendance; they are even videoing. Thank you to Megan, Lisa, Clare and Peter for taking the time to come to watch.

The after event do was at Alan’s place. The cup was presented by Megan Read, she expressed delight that the club was very vibrant again. Did Jeff win? He was very hopeful, he had done all the calculations ….. NO! He was only 6 seconds out, but came second. Katie Tahere in only her second event was absolutely bang on estimate. What an achievement – well done Katie.
